Every project begins with a problem. An issue that’s underpinned by a narrative (or several).

Sometimes it starts with a big idea, other times we go looking for one.

Either way, the first stage is Discovery. There is always so much to learn about what is really going on. Dominant narratives, systems and structures all have lots to teach us. Understanding people, what they think, what they feel and their lived experience is also fundamental. You need to see the big picture to see how change might happen.

Next comes Development. During this phase, we generate, refine and play with the most ambitous, most creative solutions we can dream up . Experimenting is vital if we’re to find new approaches and figure out what works. With that work done it’s on to Delivery and making it all happen.

While the process isn’t revolutionary – the results can be.

Want to give people who aren’t heard a voice? Build a platform for their stories and help them access the tools they need to be part of it. Want to shift a narrative from despair to prevention? Organise a high profile sporting event that embodies the prevention narrative. Think dehumanising language and actions are dangerous? Create powerful art that humanises people – including all those society might reject.

This though, is just the start. Being holistic means ensuring projects build support structures, empower communities, create advocates and put things in place for after the work ends.
